The Magodo Estate Saga And The Legal Implications Of Buying Real Estate In Nigeria

The Military Government of Lagos State forcefully acquired some plots of land at Shangisha several years back.

The law says the government can only acquire land for public purposes alone and following some laid down rules.

Lagos State Government disobeyed this law and started selling to members of the public

The landowners at Shangisha  went to court to get their lands back and almost 40 years  they got judgement in their Favour.

This means the Court confirmed that they are the owners of the land and that the people on it now are trespassers and they should vacate the land.

Lessons from this

1. Always do your due diligence before you buy real estate, all those who built on the location ( that the landowners are claiming) successfully bought nothing.

That is what happens when you donā€™t do your necessary findings before buying any property.

2. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse, the fact that the people bought the land from the government did not know what happened between the landowners and the government is not an excuse.

Always get a lawyer to trace the ā€˜root of titleā€™.

Root of title means how the owner came about title ( title means ownership).
